Goose Pond Colony is once again hosting the Spring Fling golf tournament. This is the 11th year this tournament has been held at Goose Pond Colony. Ron Marshall, the former coach at Illinois Central College, was instrumental in bringing this tournament to Scottsboro and Goose Pond Colony and 2 years ago, the tournament was renamed the Ron Marshall Spring Fling. Last year Coach Marshall passed away and Bo Ryan became the new head coach of Illinois Central College.

At last year’s tournament, Coach Ryan gave away the first Ron Marshall Award for Meritorious Service to Coach Dave Jennings at Central Alabama Community College. At this year’s banquet and much to the surprise of the staff, Coach Ryan gave this year’s award to the staff and management of Goose Pond Colony for all of their hard work and dedication to this tournament.

Golf Professional, Ryan Patterson accepted the award on behalf of the staff and management. Along with Ryan, the staff of Goose Pond Colony consists of General Manager, Lyle Sosebee, Administrative Assistant, Sheryl Bryant and Golf Course Superintendent, Chris Settles. The staff and management of Goose Pond Colony also rely on a committee of private citizens to help with and host this tournament. This committee consists of Steve Beaird of First National Bank, Rick Wheeler of the City of Scottsboro and Gail Moore of Regions Bank. Without all of their hard work and hours of volunteering, this tournament would not be the success it is.

“We are very honored to win this award. All the people of our community that works so hard to bring this event to Scottsboro deserve much of the credit. This event has grown from a small tournament to the largest Junior College regular season sporting event in the nation and it could not be done without the staff of Goose Pond Colony and volunteers.” Lyle Sosebee, General Manager of Goose Pond Colony.

“The staff at Goose Pond Colony has worked very hard the last 11 years to grow this tournament. From talking with the coaches that attend this event, this has become the highlight of their year.” Mayor, Melton Potter.

“Events like this that bring in so many people to our city have a tremendous effect on our economy. Whether it’s a fishing tournament, golf tournament or an event at our Rec-Com, these events fill up our hotels, restaurants and increase sales in our local stores. These events expose our area to many people from other parts of the country and help to bring them back for return trips. It is great to see.” Matthew Hodges, Scottsboro City Council President.

Last year this event produced over $117,475 in indirect sales for Scottsboro businesses. The participants and guests will spend over $80,350 on lodging and food. In addition, $12,750 will be spent on shopping and fuel.
